Growth and Funding

- Most of the expressway construction are funded by business, private sector, and bank loans.
- China has attracted more private funding for expressway construction than any other country in the world.
- Most of the expressway are toll road to serve debt payment.
- Investment on the highway sector amounted to almost $45 billion/year, with about one third allocated to development of the National Trunk Highway System (NTHS) – the main artery of national expressway system.

• In December 2004, the Chinese government approved further plans to expand National Expressway Network to 85,000 km (53215 miles) from 53,900 km (33,687 miles) by 2020.
• The NEN design goal is to reach more than 1 billion people in China by connecting all provincial capitals and large cities.
